Giant ‘Gigantes’ Beans from Kastoria have been awarded Potected Geographical Indication. PGI status protects and promotes traditional and regional food products of high quality which are unique to a geographic area.
The mountainous region of Kastoria is located in the far north of Greece near to the boarder of Albania. The soil in this area is fed by the River Haliakom which, combined with the mild mountainous climate, make it idealy suited to the production of these beans which are characterised by their size, thin skin and excellent flavour.
